Ms. Agyemang is a Contact teacher at North Park Secondary School. She was born in West Africa, specifically Kumasi, Ghana. She described her childhood as fun, saying she had a wonderful time in Ghana. Ms. Agyemang loved going to school; she described the teachers as strict but she knew that they meant well.
In grade 9, Ms. Agyemang had to move to Canada. She stated the transition to Canada from Ghana was difficult, as she felt she had to start over in life and learn new customs and traditions while leaving her family and friends behind. After graduating high school, Ms. Agyemang worked in shelters, group homes and helped abused women and children. Shortly after, Ms. Agyemang started working as a Contact teacher after her friend suggested she join the school board.
Ms. Agyemang currently runs multiple clubs in school such as The Black Diamonds, The Breakfast Club, Girls Let’s Talk and The Newcomers Club. She runs these clubs as an initiative to bring people together, and help students adjust to big transitions in life, such as moving from a different country. She wants to give students an opportunity to grow and improve their leadership skills. She is motivated to continue these clubs to see the smiles on students’ faces, and hear their appreciation.
When asked for any final remarks, Ms. Agyemang stated that she wants students to take advantage of the leadership opportunities offered by teachers at this school. There is also a Black Diamonds scholarship which is given to three students each year. This scholarship is funded by public contributions, so feel free to check out The Black Diamond’s Instagram page to find more information on how to donate or to receive this scholarship.
