The last period of September 26th kicked off North Park’s Terry Fox walk, a proud moment for Ms. Davies’ leadership class after weeks of preparation. Money was raised and awareness was spread for cancer research. It was a wonderful sight to see the North Park community united in raising awareness for cancer research in a five-kilometre walk.

Terry Fox was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of cancer which affects the bone. It was located in his right leg. In 1977, they amputated the leg, and Terry was given a prosthetic. However this didn’t stop Terry; instead he began a cross-country run to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Unfortunately, he was never able to finish his run, but he inspired several campaigns for cancer research across the globe.

The leadership class had only three weeks to get the Terry Fox run arranged and advertised, and they quickly sprung into action dividing up volunteers to run stations along the route, raise money, make posters and announcements, and most prominently arrange the new route. We asked Khushi Modi, a student in the leadership class, about the route change. She told us, “Honestly the reason the route was changed was because as a class we all voted and agreed that we wanted more lakes as in previous years the route felt a little boring and not too enjoyable … Us making the walk around the lake also helped with ensuring the walk was longer since no one wants to go back to class after doing [the] Terry Fox [event].”

We also talked to Ms. Davies about the preparation process and she told us, “I had a couple of my students, Jay and Jasnoor, they were in charge of the tattoo station, and that was a unique idea that they came up with this year. So they did that which was really awesome and yeah that was some stand-out [work]. I mean the people that came up with it, all of the posters were really well done, so I think it was a really good group collective effort. I have a really good leadership class this semester.”

In the end, nearly 500 dollars was raised for the Terry Fox Foundation, along with the school wide support, which has made this Terry Fox walk a successful one. Mrs. Davies ended by telling us, “I would just like to thank the North Park community for coming together, raising money, and just doing something fun on a great beautiful day in the fall. It was a great event and I just appreciate everyone who participated.”
