The North Park Model UN team, accompanied by Ms. Johnston, attended the annual Central Peel Model UN conference held on November 28th and 29th, 2024. Delegates were ready to debate on conflicts residing in either the fictional or real world. Within minutes of arriving, the motion to open debate was passed, and delegates were guided to their conference rooms.
Each room was decorated based on the committees taking place (Clash of Clans, Animal Crossing, ADHOC, Dune, etc). For example, Barbehnimer’s room consisted of 2 sides, one full black and one fully pink. Every corner you looked at were filled with sparkles, and Barbie logos alongside, cautious signs to represent Oppenheimer. It was truly dystopian.
The first day went by in a flash. Navroop, part of the Barbenheimer committee, claimed that on the first day of her committee, they typically focused on finding alternative ways to save the Barbies alongside the environment by creating sustainable sunscreens. Once in a while, the crisis would throw something at them, completely irrelevant to the conflict they were dealing with. For instance, at one point during the conference, Ken was found having an affair with J. Robert Oppenheimer, and to justify his actions he resorted to singing “I’m Just Ken”. That was just one of the moments which made CPSSMUN stand out.
The NPSS delegates continued to work hard for the next day of the conference, to pass any working documents on conflicts within their committee and remove anyone who stood in their way, such as Angela, who appeared to be shockingly in charge of the office. This demonstrates that even if your characters are prudent, you can influence anyone to do what you want by using the appropriate techniques and language. For example, in Animal Crossing, another delegate robbed a bank.
By 2 PM, the awards were in and it was finally time for the fun side of MUN. Fun MUN is an unprofessional MUN, in which delegates are not subject to any stringent restrictions and can do anything they like. Harman Ghuman, one of our delegates, took this quite literally and wrote a resolution to get everyone out of a hole they were stranded in, while leaving one member to suffer alone. The funniest part of all this is that all of the other delegates cheerfully signed that resolution. What a wonderful illustration of humanity.
While North Park did not win the best delegation, they won several awards and obtained memorable experiences. Congratulations to all North Park MUN delegates for putting yourself out there and make sure to stay updated for more covers on Model UN conferences.
