Krispy Kreme donuts have been a sweet and effective fundraising method for the Black Diamonds scholarship for the past couple of years. This year, the fundraiser was held on Friday, November 29th, selling a dozen donuts for $12.
The Black Diamonds Club scholarship was established in 2020 to assist African/Caribbean (or otherwise self-identifying) Black students facing financial challenges in pursuing post-secondary education. The scholarship is open to students pursuing apprenticeships, college, or university education and facing hardships such as socio-economic struggles, single-parent households, group-home living conditions, and special guardianship situations.
Thanks to this program and with support from their sponsors, they have successfully supported over twelve students in starting their post-secondary education in the last four years.
Ms. Yaya Agyemang is a Contact Behavioural Educational Assistant (BEA) here at North Park. She is also the teacher sponsor of Black Diamonds and runs other clubs, such as the Breakfast Club, Girls Let’s Talk, and The Newcomers Club. Her passion is helping students take advantage of opportunities and improve their leadership skills.
Ms. Agyemang shared the following quote from Angela Davis: “I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.”
Overall, this year’s sale was very successful. Thank you to those who supported and bought donuts. If you did not support this year, there are many other opportunities, such as the Black History Month showcase. Follow the Black Diamonds Instagram page @npblackdiamonds to stay up to date.
