Donald John Trump won the 2024 election, of the United States of America, against Kamala Devi Harris with a total of 312 electoral votes. He won in 30 of the 50 states of America as reported by NBC news, it is a historic comeback. One of the biggest reasons citizens voted for Trump is their concern about the state of the economy, an issue faced by many countries at this time as communicated by CBC news.
The American population remained extremely unhappy with the changes made by the Democratic party to the economy. Citizens despised the inflation that resulted with Covid-19 which is going to be addressed by Trump as he will reduce individual and corporate taxes. Furthermore, to address the economy Trump also wants to increase the domestic market of America by boosting domestic oil drilling and increasing tariffs on imported goods, announced ABC News. The tariffs, though a controversial topic, if executed appropriately is a great strategy for the planned goal. This can also force Canada to focus on implementing domestic strategies and in-turn help with the growth of our economy by reducing taxes and increasing costs on exports as well.
The Russia-Ukraine War that escalated dramatically ever since 2022, when the Democratic party was leading, is predicted to come to an end with Trump taking control once again. The newly-elected American president has already spoken to the Ukrainian and the Russian President regarding bringing the war to an end by reaching a settlement. The Russian president was warned about escalating the situation any further stated BBC, which leaves the rest of the world at ease about the consequences of what could have followed, such as the risk of a global war, increased casualties, use of mass destruction weapons, impact on global alliances, etc, if the war is escalated any further.
Before and during the election, Harris had a higher net favorability than Trump did, with a total of 52% Americans that viewed Trump unfavorably, presented by ABC news, however, he is still the best candidate. Though Trump is greatly controversial, he has a way of taking action that has kept America one of the most powerful countries in the world. Trump has always been seen as a strong leader and one who drove “change,” not only for America but for all connected countries. Though Harris was viewed positively in terms of likability and moral character, Trump is viewed positively in terms of being seen as “a strong and decisive leader,” and being able to “get things done,” as shown by the results from the Gallup survey.
As abortion has been a great reason to not support Trump, following his election the president enthusiastically stated, “I shall not push for a national abortion ban,” as per the requests of his citizens as described by Time’s news.
As discussed previously, Trump plans on implementing policies to improve the U.S economy, and as Canada is its largest trading partner, the country can benefit from economic growth and stability as well. This is because increased trade and investment can lead to more funding for public programs, including education, in Canada. Jeet, a student from North Park exclaims, “Trump will bring change to the US and inspire Canada to bring that change too.”
Ultimately, Trump won fairly due to his strong leadership skills and his ability to drive change.
