On February 21st, the school chess team pulled a Queen’s Gambit at Louise Arbour Secondary School, where they checked out the competition.

The day began bright and early, with the sound of chattering and the clacking of wood chess pieces filled the air. This was true for most of the chess teams, except our school’s. They arrived 10 minutes late to the chess tournament, which caused a delayed start. However, with nothing to lose, the team quickly got to work.

The starting was a bit rough with the team losing a few games, but within no time, they were able to pull the weight off at the end and make it into the playoffs. The president of the Chess Club, Kaushik Murali, said that a technique he used was the stonewall attack as white, a strategy used to take control of the center and attack the kingside.

Thanks to their hard work and ambition, all members of the team ended up winning and coming in third place overall. The following individuals on the team ended up medaling: Omar Muhammad, Aadi Saxema, Kaushik Murali, Yuvraj Saini, and Devansh Duaa.

When asked for advice for aspiring chess players, Kaushik Murali said, “To improve, use Chess.com and puzzles for practice, watch Gotham Chess to enhance your skills, and let tournaments serve as motivation to keep progressing.”

Congratulations to the chess team for coming in third place!
