If you haven’t heard of this 2000’s classic already, allow me to introduce you to one of the best musicals to grace our generation. Mamma Mia! is a film that ticks off all the boxes for an entertaining feature. The storyline is supported by stellar music, vibrant cinematography, and great acting that all come together to create a wonderful 2 hour escape.
The story follows Sophie (played by Amanda Seyfried), days away from her wedding to Sky Rymand (Dominic Cooper). After reading her mother’s (Meryl Streep) diary, she invited three men who could be her father to her wedding in hopes that one would walk her down the aisle on her big day. This emotional roller coaster is strung together by an unforgettable soundtrack.
Popular in the 70s and 80s, Swedish pop group ABBA brought together a soundtrack that can only be described as timeless. I found that I knew a lot of the songs before even watching the picture simply because I’ve heard them everywhere. For example, I’m sure most of you have heard “Dancing Queen,” “Slipping Through My Fingers,” and “Lay All Your Love On Me,” to name a few. Every song is completely unique in its own way and adds to the story.
The colour palette gives the movie a lighthearted, summery feel that’s making me yearn for it to be July again. Right from the beginning, all the way to the end, your screen is bursting with colours in all shades. Immediately, you’ll be able to get a feel for who the characters are just based on their clothes alone. Not to mention the camera work, which immerses you directly into the experience, really adding to what that character is feeling at that moment. The continuous spinning during “Voulez-Vous” made me feel like I knew exactly how Sophie felt at that moment.
The performance in the film also felt so natural. Right from the beginning, I was pulled into this new reality. Nothing felt performative or forced – it was truly organic. I was able to resonate with Sophie’s crisis, Donna’s confusion, and everyone’s excitement as well as nervousness for the wedding.
I would rate this movie a 10/10, truly because there is something for everyone here. Even if it doesn’t relate to you in any shape or form, I believe that there’s a little piece everyone can take away; whether it’s wholesome entertainment or a message.
