In mid-December, in front of our cafeteria, a mysterious grey rectangle covered the wall. With an unstable wood patch below the door on the ground in front of it. Everyone had lots of questions, “Why was it there?’ “How did it get there?” For a week or two after, no one seemed to know its identity.
Many people thought it resembled a door or maybe something to fix a hole in the wall, maybe even a new mural? The grey rectangle was tall and wide enough to pass as a door, but what would it lead to? Why would our school need a door in front of our cafeteria? The grey on the wall wasn’t very welcoming and looked scary.
After asking around, some people inferred it was another bathroom or maybe a new classroom for extra help. One student had an interesting take on this rectangle, “Maybe a student or someone broke the wall, and the school had to patch it up.” Recently, this rectangle has been replaced by a door. So the suspicions of it being a door were correct, but still no answer to where it leads. There were never any announcements or any discussions about this door from any teachers; perhaps it was not relevant, or maybe there lies another reason.
Another passerby student added, “The office beside this new room had half of it bricked off to be able to create the new space in the room.” In all seriousness, after asking some teachers and students who knew why the door was made, they disclosed that this door might lead to a new bathroom—there were also predictions of it being a gender-neutral bathroom.
Up until a few weeks ago, this door was a dark navy blue colour and had a light brown wood piece beside it, with some grey residue on the ground surrounding it. Now, this door leads to an all inclusive bathroom, a doorway to a more diverse and welcoming North Park.
