Have you ever wondered about how our school newspaper runs behind the scenes?
Let’s take a peek into the world of the newspaper club with our Managing Editors Harman Ghuman and Kenisha Goyal. From managing the newspaper’s quarterly releases, to ensuring all articles are submitted and edited, Ghuman and Goyal have a lot going on.
Goyal initially joined the school newspaper around halfway through her grade 11 year as a writer, and really enjoyed her experience with the newspaper club. Ghuman joined the newspaper right when it was founded 3 years ago. He initially joined as a section editor. “I put a lot of time and effort into it; I had a lot of faith in what it was about.” He also mentioned that he believed in the idea of student voices and representing the various students at our school. Ghuman was also close friends with the previous managing editor, and by watching her complete the tasks required as managing editor, he felt that he gained a lot of knowledge as to how to run the club.
However, the managing editors do not deny that running the club is a big responsibility. Ghuman stated that it is a lot of work to manage photographers, editors and writers. But it’s important to note that there are two managing editors, so tasks are delegated between them. Communication between the managing editors is key to ensure that the newspaper club is functioning at optimum efficiency. Another fact mentioned by Goyal is that “a lot of people like to sign up for not just this, but any executive position but they don’t realize that there’s work that goes into it.” She also recommends future applicants be realistic with their time to ensure that they have enough time to commit to such a large role.
Overall, the managing editors both had one thing to say in common: the role is a lot of work, but it is extremely rewarding to see it all come together, and it’s a nice experience to work with a hardworking team.
Some words of wisdom from our managing editors: apply to the newspaper club, as well as to many other situations. Obsession beats talent, and it’s important to stick with whatever you’re doing, because there will always be opportunities to take leadership roles.
