On April 25, the music council hosted a school karaoke event to raise funds for a field trip. The karaoke was held in the school cafeteria during lunch and gave both students and teachers the opportunity to sing together.

The karaoke started with members from the music council drawing raffle slips to determine which students and teachers would be singing the first song. To have their name put into a raffle, students had to pay $2 beforehand. After the student-teacher pair or group was determined, they would choose a song together before singing it. This process would repeat for the rest of the groups.

“Generally, it was pretty fun and light,” said one of the singers who wanted to remain anonymous. The student sang the song Beauty and a Beat by Justin Bieber in a group with Ms. Dos Santos. They enjoyed singing with Ms. Dos Santos, with the enthusiastic and fun energy she brought to the table. They also thought that the overall experience was worth the money, but they felt that more mics should have been prepared. Because of the bigger groups, not all the group members could get a mic, which they worried would cause some to feel left out.

Ms. Hlavnicka singing in the karaoke was a last-minute decision when she saw that the students who were supposed to sing with Ms. Chou didn’t show up. Ms. Hlavnicka didn’t want Ms. Chou to sing alone, so they ended up singing together. They sang Dancing Queen by ABBA together, which Ms. Hlavnicka enjoyed, as it was music from her youth. The only feedback she had was for there to be a larger variety of song choices.

In the end, the karaoke ended with an energetic final song. All the participating teachers walked on stage and sang a final song for the crowd. They finished just before the bell rang, allowing many students to leave with an enjoyable song stuck in their head and a positive mood.
