During period 4 on September 27, classes made their way outside for the annual Terry Fox Walk. Ms. Davies’ grade 11 Leadership class pulled off a successful Terry Fox walk after less than a month of preparation. From planning the route to posters, banners, and even outlining the NPSS letters for the drone shot picture, they did it all. Donations were collected from classes for the Terry Fox Foundation in support of cancer research.
The Leadership class had only a few weeks to plan this school-wide event. This was a part of their Events Planning unit, where they had to successfully complete the three Ps: pre-planning, performance, and post-cleanup of the event. We asked Hiba Syeda, a student in the Leadership class, about the planning process that led to the event. “It was a lot of work; we had to create a script for the class-to-class announcements, paint motivational posters for the spirit leaders, and drop off several things like the donation envelopes and North Park T-shirts.”
On the day of the event, students received T-shirts printed with “North Park Thunder” and were asked to wear them for the school photo. Classes then gathered on the field with their fourth-period teachers, watching in excitement as drones prepared to capture photos of each grade forming a letter from “NPSS.” After the pictures were taken, everyone began their Terry Fox walk, following a route that was thoughtfully planned out.
Overall, the Leadership class’s hard work paid off, running the successful event with over $500 in donations and a lot of support throughout the school community. At the end of the day, everyone left with a good afternoon walk and a freezie to cool off.
